Dry eye occurs when the quantity and/or quality of tears fails to keep the surface of the eye adequately lubricated. The risk of developing dry eye increases with advancing age. These days, though, even young people are developing dry eye due to “digital eye strain” from the overuse of computers, tablets, and mobile phones.
Dry eye causes a scratchy sensation or the feeling that something is in the eye. Other symptoms may include stinging, burning or redness, episodes of excess (reflex) tearing that follow periods of dryness, discharge, or pain. People with dry eye may also feel as if their eyelids are heavy and they may experience blurred vision.
If you have any of the symptoms in the diagram, call us anytime and we will make you an appointment to see Dr. Thomas.
